Pre-event massage is usually performed shortly before competition. It is used to warm and stimulate the muscles to promote fluid movement and reduce muscle tension. The stroke is stimulating to warm and stretch the muscles.

Post-event massage is usually performed a couple of hours after the event. It is used to aid in recovery by the promotion of blood flow to remove lactic acid, reduce cramping, strains and soreness. The stroke is not as vigerous to not stress muscles further. When exercising heavily muscles spasm or micro inflame due to tiny tears. Post event massage is designed to reduce the swelling from these microtraumas.

Maintenance massage is usually performed weekly. Its purpose is to promote blood flow to the muscles, aids in reducing the development of scar tissue while increasing the athletes range of motion and flexibility.
